Contact Committee Members!
For a bill to become a law in Tennessee, it must be filed in both the House and the Senate and be heard in committees within both bodies - that’s why it’s important to contact committee members to urge them to vote for the bill. Contact can mean a phone call to their office, an email, scheduling in-person visit with them - or all three! Contact information for the Senate and House committee members who will be voting on our bill is below.
Not sure what to say or write? Just let them know that you are a student in Tennessee, believe we need to increase voter registration and turnout in our state, and we should make it easier for young people to exercise their right to vote - and that best ways to do that are by encouraging 18 year olds to register, make it easier for college students to vote absentee, and to allow a photo ID from an accredited college or university serve as identification. Emails, phone calls, and visits should be respectful, direct, and brief! Don't forget to use the legislation's name - The Tennessee Student Voter Act - and bill number (SB2064/HB2489). We’ve also included a sample email you can use at the bottom of this page.
The Tennessee Student Voter Act
+ Require all public high schools to provide seniors with information on how to register to vote
+ Eliminate the requirement that you must vote in person before casting an absentee ballot
+ Allow students to use photo ID issued by their college or university to vote

Dear [REPRESENTATIVE or SENATOR],
Hello. I’m writing to express my support for the Tennessee Student Voter Act (TNVSA) - SB2064/HB2489. Our state has some of the lowest voter participation in the country, including among young people. This act takes common-sense steps which other states have already taken to make it easier for students to vote. Vote YES on the TNSVA to bring Tennessee up to speed on democracy.
Thank you.
